About Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive (no needles required), and painless technique for treating erectile dysfunction. It utilizes acoustic wave technology to deliver targeted disruption to the penile tissue to promote tissue repair, restore blood supply and restore erectile function.

Acoustic waves are delivered directly to anatomically strategic parts of the penis and surrounding areas. By delivering several thousand painless shocks to damaged tissue, the aim is to promote new blood vessel growth and dislodge small plaques (blockages) which may be compromising vital supply to the penile region.

In many instances, the damage to small blood vessels is related to underlying conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease or lifestyle factors such as smoking. In other cases, however, there are no tangible underlying conditions and damage may be at the microvascular level and may indicate pre-disease states. In many such instances, small plaques can affect the blood supply to the penis, causing dysfunction.

Shockwave Therapy for ED is a short treatment of approximately 15 minutes per session. To achieve optimal results, six sessions are undertaken once or twice weekly over 3-6 weeks.

The procedure is completely painless and requires no special preparation. Patients are able to receive rapid treatment and return to their day as normal with minimal and in most cases NO DISCOMFORT.

What is Shockwave therapy?

Shockwave Therapy is the most effective non-invasive therapy for erectile dysfunction. It involves utilizing a sophisticated machine to deliver targeted acoustic waves to six anatomically strategic areas of the penis.

How is Shockwave Therapy performed?

Patients are placed in a comfortable position a specialized probe is used to deliver 3000 shockwaves to pre-determined areas of the penis and surrounding tissues. No special preparation is required and the procedure is painless in the vast majority of cases and at worst causes mild discomfort. Most patients require around six sessions delivered in six separate sessions over 3-6 weeks.

How does it work?

Acoustic waves stimulate new blood vessel growth and tissue repair. Targeted shockwaves also disrupt small plaques which may be disrupting blood flow to the penis and contributing to erectile dysfunction.

What are the benefits?

Shockwave Therapy aims to improve erectile strength and function. Many patients who have not experienced even early morning erections for decades notice quite dramatic improvements early in the therapy. We normally advise patient that it can take up to 6-12 weeks post completion of therapy to realize the full benefits of the treatment.

As well as improving the chances of being able to have penetrative intercourse Shockwave Therapy also in many cases improves penile girth and length due to new tissue growth as a result of new blood formation.

Can shockwave therapy be used in conjunction with the P shot?

Can Shockwave Therapy be used with medications that are used to treat erectile dysfunction?

Many other patients have already tried medications such as Cialis, sildenafil, etc, with varying degrees of success. Our therapies can safely be used in conjunction with such medications and in some cases we actively prescribe them to enhance the results of our treatments.

Is Shockwave Therapy for erectile dysfunction safe?

Shockwave is the safest treatment for erectile dysfunction. Many of our patients suffer from extensive medical conditions including heart disease, diabetes, and renal failure, and therefore cannot take medications to help with erectile dysfunction. Shockwave therapy for ED is very safe for these patients.

What is the aim of Shockwave Therapy?

Whilst results are variable, the aim of the therapy is to:

Several research studies have shown that Shockwave Therapy is effective for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. A recent urology review in 2017 reviewed the results of nine unique studies and found the therapy to be effective in improving erectile strength using objective measures. Other studies have also shown that Shockwave Therapy can be particularly beneficial for patients who have seen results with PDE5is (e.g Viagra, Cialis). Furthermore, it has been shown in some studies that patients who previously didn’t have any results with PDE5is medications, started responding to those medications following courses of Shockwave Therapy. Many were able to undertake intercourse with the aide of this effective therapy. This suggests this therapy is not only effective for most cases of erectile dysfunction but it can also benefit those who have til now seen little benefit from standard oral therapies (which can cause side effects and also are contra-indicated in some patients who are suffering severe underlying conditions).
